She’s Dating the Gangster (2014):Movie Review

I’ve watched my first Filipino movie today with my boyfriend. Currently, I’m trying to learn Tagalog since my boyfriend is Filipino, and at the same time he is trying to learn Spanish from me. I thought it would be an excellent idea to start watching more programs in Tagalog in order to learn.

Anyways, I had no idea that Wattpad was huge in the Philippines! I’ve started my account this year, so I’m still surprised to know that books can get adapted into movies! How did I stumble onto this particular movie you may ask, well it was my good friend that kept raving about it. I looked on Google and the synopsis seemed interesting!

Main Cast:

  • Kathryn Bernardo as young Athena Dizon / Kelay Dizon
  • Daniel Padilla as young Kenji Delos Reyes / Kenneth Delos Reyes

Synopis: The story takes place both in the past and the present. The past is supposed to take place in the early 1990s. Kenji Delos Reyes is a “gangster” and is feared among his classmates, while Athena Dizon is the typical nice, studious girl. Kenji is heartbroken because his girlfriend Athena Abigail Tizon (Abi) has broken up with him for reasons unknown. Kenji desperately wants to get back with his old girlfriend, but accidently pages the other Athena’s beeper. Kenji realizes that his messages are being sent to the wrong person. He kisses Athena and asks her to become his girlfriend in order to make his ex-girlfriend jealous.

In the present, Kenji’s son, Kenneth, is bitter about his father for not loving him and his mother enough. Kenneth blames the other Athena for being the root of the problem. Kenji takes a business trip and his plane has an accident. Kenneth finds out the news and hurries to know the fate of his father. In the airport, he meets Kelay, who pretends to be his sister in order to find out information about Kenji. When Kelay reveals her true identity, he is surprised to know that she is the other Athena’s relative.

Commentary: The movie had many cheesy moments, but I really liked the story. I loved Kenji and Athena more than Kenneth and Kelay. The past was the main focus of the movie, and I thought the relationship was cute. I did have a feeling that one of the main characters was going to have a disease. I’ve watched a couple Asian movies where the protagonist has a disease, and so I was not surprised when Athena had a heart condition. I was right, but I was surprised to know that Athena Abigail also had a disease. She had her reason for breaking up with Kenji because she was dying and I thought it was really sad. This whole time, I expected Athena Abigail to be the typical popular girl, but in fact, she was sacrificial and caring person. I couldn’t dislike her character. I was indeed happy that this story had no unlikable characters. I loved Kenji, he was a very sweet and loving boyfriend. The only problem that I had with the “gangster” part was that he was not so much of a gangster. Kenji was more like a bully, but he was popular. I expected him to be more of a bad boy, oh well. One part that I did not like was that they used the same actors from the past to play the present characters. They could have used other actors that looked similar. I really liked Daniel Padilla, he is a very good looking actor. I want to see more of his other works! I did like that all the characters were connected to each other! The ending ended at a happy note, though not everyone had their happily ever after. I would definitely recommend this movie. The movie is mainly geared towards teenagers. It may not be the greatest, but it’s enjoyable to watch and just about anyone could watch it. It seem like a PG-13 movie!

Final Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5)
