Akatsuki no Yona: Anime Review

“Even so…to protect you I’m willing to take up a weapon. Even if it means sacrificing someone!” – Yona

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆This will be my first anime review. I’m trying to include more of my interests on my blog. I’ll try not to include spoilers. (۶ꈨຶꎁꈨຶ )۶ʸᵉᵃʰᵎ

MyAnimeList Synopsis: Princess Yona lives a life of luxury and ease, completely sheltered from the problems of the seemingly peaceful Kingdom of Kouka; however, the sudden murder of the king and betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won places Yona’s life in mortal peril. Forced to escape only with Son Hak, who is both her childhood friend and bodyguard, the naïve princess soon discovers that Kouka is not the idyllic place she envisioned it to be. Poverty, strife, and corruption run rampant, making reclaiming the throne nothing more than a wishful fantasy given the kingdom’s current state.

Characters: I really loved the characters in this short anime. It was really hard to pick my favorite character!! All the characters were likable especially Yona, the protagonist. Yona is the princess whose kingdom was taken from her. She is brave, passionate, bubbly, and strong. She deeply cares for her friends, especially Hak. She constantly wants to be helpful, and not a burden. She learns to adapt to her new environment. She starts off as “weak” and as the series progresses, she learns to use weapons even though he father hated it.

Hak is Yona’s childhood friend and is called the Thunder Beast of Kouka. He is constantly protecting the princess from any dangers and also has a crush on her.He wishes for her happiness, and puts her needs first. In the beginning, he was willing to die for herHe respects Yona and he admires how much she has changed. Hak is also one of the funniest characters in the show. Hak is now on my list of top anime boyfriends, its hard not to love Hak.

Then there is Yun, he is not a fighter like Hak or the four dragons, but he is the genius of the group. He can just about anything such as cooking, healing, and being a strategist. I just love how he calls himself a “handsome young boy”. He is a bookworm and is a bit rude, but he is loveable. He was the caretaker of Ik Soo’s prior leaving on his journey with Yona and Hak.

As for the four dragons, it was hard choosing my favorite, but it has to be Shin-Ah. He is the Blue Dragon, and has the saddest storyline from the other two dragons (the yellow dragon’s story has not been told completely). He was born in a village where people saw his gift as a curse and he is hated among his people. He has the ability to see long distances. He hardly removes his mask because he feels  he is a monster. It was really heartbreaking to learn that he had no proper name when he joined the group. Yona is the one to give him his name. He is the shyest of the group and rarely talks. Jaeja, the green dragon, is my second favorite since he reminds me a bit of Sanji from One Piece. He was a pirate before joining the group. He is flirtatious, a playboy, and hates his destiny as the Green Dragon. He wants his own freedom, and doesn’t want to bow down to any master. He has the ability to jump really high in the sky and is very powerful. I love how much he teases and creeps out Hak. After the Awa arc, he changes his mind about the prophecy and joins the group. Lastly, there is Kija, the white dragon. In his village, he is loved for gift. He joins the group and has a rivalry with Hak. Hak constantly calls him “white snake”. Kija has the ability of the dragon claw on one of his arms. His blessed arm is covered in scales and could alter the size of his hand. Kija is the only one from the dragons that deeply believes in the prophecy and sees Yona as the descendant of King Hiryuu. I can’t say much about Zeno, the yellow dragon, since he was introduced on the last episode. I’ll have to read the manga to find about more about him since he doesn’t reveal much to the group. Zeno was the only dragon not to have felt the connection with Yona.

Su Won, is the villain and the current king. He was very loving towards Yona when he was a child, but he changed. I still have my doubts about him. Though he is supposed to be the bad guy, he still cares for Yona and Hak.  It was really hard for me to label him as a villain, because most of his intentions were good such as bringing in more wealth to the Earth tribe and not revealing to his bodyguards that Yona is alive. He is a good king, but his motivations are not clear. That’s why I found him really interesting. Despite killing his uncle, he is trying his best to rid the kingdom of corruption and unite the four tribes. I can’t seem to hate him.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series. I had so much fun watching it. You will not regret watching this series. It is only 24 episodes long and sadly, there has been no news to weather this show will get a second season. It totally deserves a second season! The first season did an excellent job of introducing all the major characters. I really thought it was going to be a stereotypical reverse harem, but it was more than that. There is romantic tension between Yona and Hak, but it’s minimal. The romance doesn’t play a big role in the series. I still don’t see Yona’s father in a bad light. I really liked the animation. The characters are amazing and unique! I laughed so much with this series and loved it! Usually I read a manga and watch the anime adaptation, but this will be the first time I’ll be reading the manga after watching the anime. I loved the instrumental opening to the anime. The ost was perfect. I want to know more about the dragon prophecy because there is no denying that Yona is King Hiryuu. I enjoyed the anime so much, I want to know what happens with Yona and the gang! I can’t wait till season two!!! You won’t regret watching it!! I have no complaints for this anime.⌒°(❛ᴗ❛)°⌒

I would recommend this anime to fans of Ouran High School Host Club and Inuyasha.
