My Christmas Story

When I was a preteen, I still believed in Santa Claus. Now, this was a time before I had internet and I was a bit more naive and innocent. I wrote letters to the North Pole and believed with my whole heart in him. I was the only one from my group of friends that had faith in Santa Claus. When I turned 13, one of my friends told me he didn’t exist. It was one of my first heartbreaks in life, knowing that Santa Claus was not real. I slowly lost my faith in him when I didn’t get the items I wanted on my wish list. Eventually, I stopped believing in him and stopped writing letters to him. Even though I don’t believe anymore, I still think that the idea of a Father Christmas is interesting. I think the stories I’ve read about him are sweet. Though he is not real, I love taking pictures with Santa Claus.

My Favorite Christmas Food:

Growing up in a Mexican household, my grandma, mom, and auntie would cook a lot of delicious Mexican food for the holiday seasons! I’m not an expert when it comes cooking, but I’m an expert when it comes to eating!! Here are some of my favorite foods for Christmas!

  • Arroz Con Leche: Rice pudding!

  • Atole: One of the best drinks you can have during the winter season! Tastes bomb if you eat it with pan dulce!

atole

  • Champurrado: The Hispanic version of hot chocolate

  • Ponche de Fruta: It’s like a hot version of fruit punch, that’s the best way to describe it! It’s very good. If my auntie doesn’t make champurrado, this is always the next best alternative.

  • Pozole: A classic traditional Mexican dish. It’s a soup that has hominy and chicken. It’s one of my favorite foods to eat on Christmas!

  • Tamales: No Christmas is complete without tamales! Some of them are made sweet and some of them are made with either chicken or pork!

Christmas Traditions

Growing up in a Hispanic household, I would attend posadas with my family since they are extremely catholic. What I remember most about going to the posadas is the delicious food and the all the merriment from my familia.

Another tradition that I love is marathoning Christmas movies with my sisters, mostly ABC Family movies. Even though I’ve watched those old cartoons several times, I never grow tired of them.

Lastly, I love how each year we have a theme for our Christmas party. Last year, it was holiday dresses and for this year it is ugly christmas sweaters!

My Favorite Things:

  1.  My family! Christmas is the perfect holiday to bring relatives closer together. I really enjoy celebrating Christmas at my house and I love seeing my baby cousins. I love taking goofy pictures with my sisters and cracking jokes with the adults.
  2. Decorating the Christmas tree! Each year we add new ornaments to our usual Christmas tree. My sisters and I spend most of the time shopping for new ornaments this time of year. We like making our tree stand out.
  3. Holiday drinks. I go to Starbucks and Coffee Bean a lot more now that they have holiday drinks!
  4. I love wearing ugly christmas sweaters, but I find it fun to create your own design! This was me a couple years ago:DIY Christmas Sweater
  5. Gifts! Who doesn’t like a good present? I really like shopping for gifts for my relatives, and buying myself an occasional gift.
  6. Christmas music!!! The pandora jazz holiday station is one of my favorites. I feel upbeat and merry when I sing along. Daphne Love Derby’s cover is one of my favorites:
