Winter by Marissa Meyer: Book Review

“She’s our lost princess. And she’s coming home.”

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆ Goodreads Synopsis: Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

Commentary: I have been looking forward to reading Winter ever since I finished Cress last year. Winter has been on my tbr list for a very long time. When I got the book, I immediately wanted it read it, but I had other books I had to read first. It has been the longest book that I have read for this year!!! ⤴︎ ε=ε=(ง ˃̶͈̀ᗨ˂̶͈́)۶ ⤴︎

I really found the last book to be really amazing. The series got better with each book. I liked Cinder, Scarlet was better, Cress was amazing, and Winter was epic. I really can’t believe that the adventure is finally over. (⁎⁍̴̀﹃ ⁍̴́⁎)♡

As I mentioned, this book is massive and there are so many things that were happening in this book. Honestly, I felt that this book should have been a bit longer just because I felt some of the characters did not have enough screen time. For example, I felt that Winter did not have enough time as the other characters. She is one of the most complex heroines. She refuses to use her lunar gift, but she is mentally ill because of it. I really liked how Marissa Meyer handled her character. Winter was really precious. I loved her friendship with Scarlet, since at first Scarlet didn’t trust her, but eventually their friendship grows.

“Winter tilted her head in Scarlet’s direction. A spiral of black hair fell across her cheek, obstructing her scars. “What did you bring me today?” Scarlet asked. “Delusional mutterings with a side of crazy? Or is this one of your good days?”

What I loved was how all the characters are based on fairy tales. I liked how Meyer gave the Snow White story a twist. Though I wish Winter and Jacin had more of a backstory. Secondly, this book had many comedic moments! ╰(✧∇✧╰)

Thorne scoffed. “Careful is my middle name. Right after Suave and Daring.”
“Do you even know what you’re saying half the time?” asked Cinder.

Oh how I am going to miss Thorne so much.

“Thorne’s voice pitched high in imitation of the queen. “The impostor of my beloved niece is vanquished … Let us put this messiness behind us while we go forward with the coronations … I am a psychotic, power-hungry nut basket and my breath smells really bad under this veil.”

It was a good balance with the drama that was happening. I did like the bromance between Kai and Thorne.

Other than that, Levana is still evil and just as crazy. There were moments where I was feeling pity towards her, but Levana is not redeemable at all. I won’t spoil anything because you have to read this book. It’s dramatic and action packed, and it made me teary eye by the end of the book. I will really miss these characters. I will miss their adventures. I will truly miss The Lunar Chronicles. At least Stars Above is coming out next year! Can’t wait for the epilogue! ໒( ♥ ◡ ♥ )७

My favorite pairings:

  1. Cinder and Kai – Loved this couple from the beginning of the series. Of course, they would be my top pairing. Kai and Cinder sacrifice so much for each other, and I was glad that they have a happily ever after.
  2. Cress and Thorne – I would have loved it even more if they had more moments together. They have the funniest moments, and they are one of the cutest pairings.
  3. Scarlet and Wolf – I love this couple, they have many great moments in the last book. They have been through so much in this book.
  4. Winter and Jacin – They have loved each other since they were young and they are childhood friends. I would have wished for more moments between Jacin and Winter. I felt they were a bit under developed compared to the other pairings, but they did have their cute moments.

Quotes:

“A kiss from the Captain would probably melt my central processor.”
Thorne winked at her. “Oh trust me. It would.”

“Help me. Fight for me. And I will be the first ruler in the history of Luna who will also fight for you.”

“I can’t believe this is happening. I can’t fight like this, or start a revolution, or be a queen. I can’t do anything like this. I’m broken. I’m literally broken.” Iko settled a hand on Cinder’s shoulder. “Yeah, but broken isn’t the same as unfixable.”

Final Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆

serena heart eyes

Fairest by Marissa Meyer: Book Review

“She cried for the girl who had never belonged. A girl who tried so hard, harder than anyone else, and still never had anything to show for it.”

Goodreads Synopsis:

In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of them all?

Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.

Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from Winter, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.

Commentary: When I first heard that Queen Levana was going to have her own story last year, I was more than excited. When I read the Lunar Chronicles for the first time, I thought it was more than amazing. I read Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress all in one week. I had really high hopes for Levana’s story, and I am glad that Marissa Meyer did not disappoint her fans. I love Levana as a villain, so when I was reading her story, I did feel sorry for her. First of all, her sister was the cause of her disfigurement. That event marked the beginning of the end for Levana. Channary was a horrible older sister, no wonder Levana is the way she is. Secondly, there is no love in her family. She doesn’t cry over the death of her parents nor of her sister. Levana constantly had to remind herself that there is no such thing like true love, since her parents had a loveless marriage. Levana had low self esteem and constantly had to hid her true self by using her glamour. I did feel that her hatred of mirrors was understandable. The mirror showed her reality, a reality that she was not ready to face. The girl was desperate for love, and she was quite “thristy” for Evret. I felt so bad for Evret since Levana would not leave him alone and things became worse for him when his wife died. He was just trying to be a friend, but Levana saw his friendship as love. He constantly tried telling her to find happiness, but she wouldn’t listen. I couldn’t stop shaking my head, Levana needed to take a chill pill. I couldn’t believe she forced him to have sex with her. I felt that Levana was insensitive, needy, manipulative, and delusional, I can’t forget to mention that she is psychotic. She couldn’t stop manipulating Evret before he agreed to marry her.  I really thought it was creepy how she glamoured herself to look like Solstice throughout her marriage. Levana constantly got want she wanted, she got her man, and she got the crown. What she did to Selene was very unforgivable, but Levana had to do what she thought was beneficial for herself. Once Levana became queen, she thought her actions were going to be beneficial to her country. She tried to think what was best for her country, even though her methods were extreme. Such as the extermination of the shells, creating a disease that would affect Earthens, creating a army of beasts, and so on. As queen, she was able to establish a legacy that surpassed her previous relatives.  I really enjoyed this novella, I thought it was a great prequel to the story. I really liked how readers got a glimpse to Princess Selene and Princess Winter’s childhood. It made me more excited for the last book in the series. I enjoyed this short novella, and I can’t wait for Winter.

Final Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cinder by Marissa Meyer: Book Review

I kept seeing this book series whenever I was looking for a new series to start. The cover looked amazing and it convinced me to start the series. I knew it was going to be a Cinderella retelling, but I had no idea what it was going to be about. I just finished the book and it was great. This review will have a bit of spoilers so be warn!

Cover: I love the cover!

Characters: My favorite character from the Lunar Chronicles so far is Cinder. I thought that she was amazing, the author developed her character. She was a cyborg who constantly felt like an outsider with her step family who did not love her (except for Peony, her stepsister). She was the girl with the mysterious backstory that had no recollections of her memories prior to her cyborg surgery. She’s sarcastic and very tomboyish mechanic who can’t blush or have tears due to her surgery. I can’t wait to read about her in the next book. Prince Kai, was very charming from the beginning of the novel. I enjoyed his scenes with Cinder, from their first meeting at the marketplace to their dance at the ball. It was interesting to see how he transitioned from being a prince to an emperor. He has many problems that he wants to resolve such tensions between the Lunar Kingdom and Earth. May I say, that I loved Queen Levana as the villain. I really thought she was a Queen Bee. Although I have not read the other books in the series (I will eventually get to them), I am excited for her story!

Plot: This was more than a Cinderella retelling. The author really took time to create this world. It’s in the future and there’s conflict between the Moon and Earth. It really reminded me of Sailor Moon! (for example: Cinder kept saying that lunars have magical powers). The plot, I thought was really interesting. You have Cinder as an outsider cyborg who is in fact Princess Selene (this gets revealed till the very end). The main conflict that I found in the story is that Queen Levana does not want to sign any peace treaties with Earth and wants marry Prince Kai in order to become Empress and later dominate the entire world. Cinder is the one to let Kai know of what Queen Levana is plotting thanks to a mysterious lunar girl whose guardian is Sybil Mira (thaumaturge of the Lunar Kingdom).  There are two other subplots that I can think of such as Prince Kai’s determination to find Princess Selene and marry her instead of Queen Levana, and secondly, Cinder being immune to lemutosis.

Sad Moments: I was sad to see Peony die. I had hope for her to survive since Cinder was given the antidote for lemutosis. I did shed a tear when Cinder was removing her id chip. Then there’s the part with Cinder discovering Iko’s personality chip in her room. Lastly when Prince Kai told Cinder “Was it all in my head? A Lunar trick…You’re even more painful to look at than she is” (Kai realizing that Cinder is both Lunar and cyborg.

Shock Factor: I was not as shocked to learn that Cinder was Princess Selene, but I did find it shocking that Lunars were immune to lemutosis.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you’re a fan of the fairy tale retellings, this book is perfect for you. I am really excited to continue reading the Lunar Chronicles

My rating is a 4 out of 5 🙂
