Testament Of Youth: Movie Review

They’ll want to forget you. They’ll want me to forget. But I can’t. I won’t. This is my promise to you now. All of you.

This movie broke my heart into several pieces. I had a feeling it was going to be a tragedy from the moment I saw the trailer. All I have to say is prepare to have your heart broken, it was such a tear jerker. ‧º·(˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )‧º·˚ It was such an amazing movie!!! I am a huge fan of period dramas, and let me tell you that Testament Of Youth has been one of the best one that I have watched in such a long time. This movie is based on Vera Brittain’s book Testament of Youth, and it takes place during the Great War, otherwise known as World War I. Vera wants to be a writer despite her father’s wishes. She is studious and wants to go to school. What I really like about this film is that there are subtle hints of the war. Vera experiences heartbreak as her brother, fiancé, and friend join the war. Vera volunteers to be a nurse while her three musketeers fight for a great cause. Slowly she learns about the terror and deals tragedy at such a young age. All the actors were phenomenal! Especially Kit Harington, who played Roland Leighton (Vera’s finace) and Alicia Vakander who played Vera. I felt that they had a lot of chemistry together. Before watching the actual movie, I really thought that the romance was going to play a major role in the film. This film does have romance, but it mostly portrays the hardships of war and losing one’s innocence. For example, the war completely changed Roland. He wrote poetry prior joining the war, and was overall happier, but the more time he spent in the battlefield, Roland became broken. It felt as if he were suffering from post traumatic stress disorder by the time he reunited with Vera. I don’t want to completely spoil the movie, but it is definitely a must watch. There aren’t any real fighting scenes, that would be my only minor complaint. Also, the soundtrack was superb, I can’t stop listening to it. I will most definitely add Vera Brittain’s book to my to be read list. Finally, this poem that Roland Leighton wrote was so beautiful.

Violets from Plug Street Wood,
Sweet, I send you oversea.
(It is strange they should be blue,
Blue, when his soaked blood was red,
For they grew around his head;
It is strange they should be blue.)

Violets from Plug Street Wood-
Think what they have meant to me-
Life and Hope and Love and You
(And you did not see them grow
Where his mangled body lay
Hiding horror from the day;
Sweetest it was better so.)

Violets from oversea,
To your dear, far, forgetting land
These I send in memory,
Knowing You will understand.

Yuki Yuna Is A Hero: Anime Review

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆ Synopsis: Follow the adventures Yuki Yuna and the “Hero Club” she joins as they aim to do their best for the community they live in, ranging from helping other clubs to fighting off mysterious enemies known as “Vertex”, all in time to attend classes and have fun.

Commentary: When I first watched the pv of this anime, I thought it was going to be a cute show about a group of friends. It looked fun. You wouldn’t think it was a dark anime. I was not prepared for I got myself into. Yuki Yuna had its moments of fun, but at the same time, it was dark. The five protagonists are working for the Taisha (government) in order to protect the world from vertexes that are a major threat. The protagonists work hard to protect Shinju (god). Now, Yuki Yuna reminded me of  Puella Magi Madoka Magica because each girl had a price to pay for being a magical girl. The heroes get experience points for the vertexes they destroy. Each girl has a flower on her uniform that indicates how much experience points she has received. When the mankai guage (five petal flower) is filled, the girls transform into their ultimate forms, making them nearly unstoppable. There is a catch to all of this, when they return to their normal selves, they sacrifice a part of themselves permanently. ༼ ༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ༽

Characters: Yuki Yuna is the one of five protagonists in this anime. She is the definition of what a hero is supposed to be. She was willing to fight anything as long as the ones she loved were protected. Yuna constantly put others needs before herself. She is also physically strong. Overall, she is positive and motivates other characters. She is the best friend of Togo Mimori. In hero mode, she fights with armored gauntlets.

Mimori Togo is disabled and has lost memories “due to an accident”. She is the mature one of the group and always speaks her mind. She is very talented in baking and is the techie of the group. She has feelings for Yuna. Togo fights with rifles when she is in her hero form. She used to go by the name of Washio Sumi (Washio Sumi Is A Hero: light novel and prequel), she fought the vertexes in her past. She was an archer when she was still called Washio Sumi. Because she filled her mankai twice, she lost her memories and the ability to walk.

Fu Inubouzaki is the leader of the Hero club. She recruited Yuna and Togo to join the club. She feels responsible for the safety of her friends, especially her younger sister. She is often a loud mouth, but at the same time mature. She is both sister and mother because her parents were killed. She wields a giant sword in hero mode.

Itsuki Inubouzaki is the younger sister of Fu. She is timid and shy, and wants to become a singer. She admires her older sister a lot for always being helpful. Itsuki aspires to be like Fu. She has a hobby of telling people’s fortune by using tarot cards. In hero form, she has magical vines that ensnares vertexes.

Karin Miyoshi is the tsundere of the group. She was introduced in episode 3 and was not chosen by Taisha to be a hero like the others. Because of her dedication and rigorous training, she was given her powers. She is very stubborn and has a hard time communicating her feelings. She is very loyal to her friends and opens up eventually. (இ﹏இ`。)

If I had to pick my favorite character, it would have to be Karin. She was a true friend to all the other characters. Especially near the ending of the anime, I was in tears when Karin went mankai four times. Karin was willing to sacrifice herself serval times as long as she was able to protect her friends. It was heart wrenching. (⁎·́௰·̀)◞ ͂͂(˒̩̩̥́௰˓̩̩̥̀⁎) My second favorite had to be Itsuki, she was too precious. My favorite moment had to be when Fu wanted to destroy Taisha for withholding important information from them. Fu wanted to destroy everything because Itsuki lost her precious voice as result from sange. I had a feeling that the Taisha were not to be trusted from the start. The Taisha worship those chosen as heroes as shown in episode 8. This series made me cry so much when it started to get darker. I felt it had the perfect balance of dark and fun. I really liked the ending, I thought it was amazing and was glad it ended on a happier note. The scenery is also amazing!! I really want to read Washio Sumi now that I have finished Yuki Yuna. I would recommend just watching the anime first. ‧⁺◟( ᵒ̴̶̷̥́ ·̫ ᵒ̴̶̷̣̥̀ )

I would recommend this anime to Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Akatsuki no Yona: Anime Review

“Even so…to protect you I’m willing to take up a weapon. Even if it means sacrificing someone!” – Yona

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆This will be my first anime review. I’m trying to include more of my interests on my blog. I’ll try not to include spoilers. (۶ꈨຶꎁꈨຶ )۶ʸᵉᵃʰᵎ

MyAnimeList Synopsis: Princess Yona lives a life of luxury and ease, completely sheltered from the problems of the seemingly peaceful Kingdom of Kouka; however, the sudden murder of the king and betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won places Yona’s life in mortal peril. Forced to escape only with Son Hak, who is both her childhood friend and bodyguard, the naïve princess soon discovers that Kouka is not the idyllic place she envisioned it to be. Poverty, strife, and corruption run rampant, making reclaiming the throne nothing more than a wishful fantasy given the kingdom’s current state.

Characters: I really loved the characters in this short anime. It was really hard to pick my favorite character!! All the characters were likable especially Yona, the protagonist. Yona is the princess whose kingdom was taken from her. She is brave, passionate, bubbly, and strong. She deeply cares for her friends, especially Hak. She constantly wants to be helpful, and not a burden. She learns to adapt to her new environment. She starts off as “weak” and as the series progresses, she learns to use weapons even though he father hated it.

Hak is Yona’s childhood friend and is called the Thunder Beast of Kouka. He is constantly protecting the princess from any dangers and also has a crush on her.He wishes for her happiness, and puts her needs first. In the beginning, he was willing to die for herHe respects Yona and he admires how much she has changed. Hak is also one of the funniest characters in the show. Hak is now on my list of top anime boyfriends, its hard not to love Hak.

Then there is Yun, he is not a fighter like Hak or the four dragons, but he is the genius of the group. He can just about anything such as cooking, healing, and being a strategist. I just love how he calls himself a “handsome young boy”. He is a bookworm and is a bit rude, but he is loveable. He was the caretaker of Ik Soo’s prior leaving on his journey with Yona and Hak.

As for the four dragons, it was hard choosing my favorite, but it has to be Shin-Ah. He is the Blue Dragon, and has the saddest storyline from the other two dragons (the yellow dragon’s story has not been told completely). He was born in a village where people saw his gift as a curse and he is hated among his people. He has the ability to see long distances. He hardly removes his mask because he feels  he is a monster. It was really heartbreaking to learn that he had no proper name when he joined the group. Yona is the one to give him his name. He is the shyest of the group and rarely talks. Jaeja, the green dragon, is my second favorite since he reminds me a bit of Sanji from One Piece. He was a pirate before joining the group. He is flirtatious, a playboy, and hates his destiny as the Green Dragon. He wants his own freedom, and doesn’t want to bow down to any master. He has the ability to jump really high in the sky and is very powerful. I love how much he teases and creeps out Hak. After the Awa arc, he changes his mind about the prophecy and joins the group. Lastly, there is Kija, the white dragon. In his village, he is loved for gift. He joins the group and has a rivalry with Hak. Hak constantly calls him “white snake”. Kija has the ability of the dragon claw on one of his arms. His blessed arm is covered in scales and could alter the size of his hand. Kija is the only one from the dragons that deeply believes in the prophecy and sees Yona as the descendant of King Hiryuu. I can’t say much about Zeno, the yellow dragon, since he was introduced on the last episode. I’ll have to read the manga to find about more about him since he doesn’t reveal much to the group. Zeno was the only dragon not to have felt the connection with Yona.

Su Won, is the villain and the current king. He was very loving towards Yona when he was a child, but he changed. I still have my doubts about him. Though he is supposed to be the bad guy, he still cares for Yona and Hak.  It was really hard for me to label him as a villain, because most of his intentions were good such as bringing in more wealth to the Earth tribe and not revealing to his bodyguards that Yona is alive. He is a good king, but his motivations are not clear. That’s why I found him really interesting. Despite killing his uncle, he is trying his best to rid the kingdom of corruption and unite the four tribes. I can’t seem to hate him.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series. I had so much fun watching it. You will not regret watching this series. It is only 24 episodes long and sadly, there has been no news to weather this show will get a second season. It totally deserves a second season! The first season did an excellent job of introducing all the major characters. I really thought it was going to be a stereotypical reverse harem, but it was more than that. There is romantic tension between Yona and Hak, but it’s minimal. The romance doesn’t play a big role in the series. I still don’t see Yona’s father in a bad light. I really liked the animation. The characters are amazing and unique! I laughed so much with this series and loved it! Usually I read a manga and watch the anime adaptation, but this will be the first time I’ll be reading the manga after watching the anime. I loved the instrumental opening to the anime. The ost was perfect. I want to know more about the dragon prophecy because there is no denying that Yona is King Hiryuu. I enjoyed the anime so much, I want to know what happens with Yona and the gang! I can’t wait till season two!!! You won’t regret watching it!! I have no complaints for this anime.⌒°(❛ᴗ❛)°⌒

I would recommend this anime to fans of Ouran High School Host Club and Inuyasha.

Beast Master by Kyousuke Motomi: Manga Review

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆ Summary: Leo Aoi looks like a crazy animal with wild eyes–and no one at his new high school will go near him! He does seem to have a special connection with animals though, which intrigues overzealous animal-lover Yuiko Kubozuka. In reality, Leo isn’t as frightening as he appears, but Yuiko finds out that he goes berserk whenever he sees blood! Will Yuiko be able to get through to Leo during these violent fits? Or will Leo’s ferocious side eventually devour her?

Commentary: I recognized the art style immediately. Kyousuke Motomi is the creator of Dengeki Daisy!! (; ● ∀ ●) ゝI just can’t believe how short this manga is! It’s only two volumes! I felt that there was potential to expand the manga for a few more volumes. I was a bit disappointed because it was so short. It made me laugh for most of the time too. I read this series in one sitting. The relationship between Leo and Yukiko was the best! Leo was too adorable! I really liked how he was opposite from Yukiko. Animals loved him, but the animal kingdom seemed to hate Yukiko. It was even more ironic since her dad is a vet. I also liked that everyone respected Yukiko by “taming the best”. It was hard to believe that he had a wild side. This manga teaches you not to judge people on appearances. It’s just a cute romance! It made me laugh most of all. The cover art is a bit misleading. ✺◟(∗❛ัᴗ❛ั∗)◞✺ Overall, it’s a fun read! You won’t regret it!

Cat Street by Yoko Kamio: Manga Review

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆ Summary: The story centers around Keito Aoyama, a former famous child actor. Due to a childhood incident, she retired from her career early and withdrew from normal society. Now 16, she passes her days in boredom and without purpose. But one day she runs into a stranger who takes her to El Liston–a free school for high school students like herself, who don’t have a place where they belong. Though hesitant at first, Keito decides to enter El Liston and subsequently, she begins a new stage in her life. With the help of her only remaining childhood friend, Taiyou, and her new classmates Rei, Momiji, and Kouichi, Keito slowly finds the courage to open up to others and to accept their support. Will Keito return to acting? Will she find true friends? Love?

Commentary: The manga series was wonderful. My sister and my really good friend recommended it to me, and I finally found time to read it. The first chapter had me hooked! I couldn’t put it down. I can’t believe that I finished it all in one sitting. When I finished the last chapter, I couldn’t believe it. I wanted more. I couldn’t believe how short it was. The series was definitely worth it! ʚ♡⃛ɞ(ू•ᴗ•ू❁)

The characters were amazing. Best character development! Keito was so precious. I was happy how she changed for the better. She went from a low point of her life and was able to find success as an actress. I was really happy that she was able to grow and learn to become a better person. Most of her past events were a bit traumatic, luckily for her, she was surrounded by her friends who were just like her.

I was a Kouichi-Keito shipper from the start! I knew that he was going to be the one she would end up with! I liked that pairing more than Rei and Keito. What I really liked was the their relationship was built up. They didn’t get together from the start, they didn’t fall for each other. They simply understood each other and both of them gradually liked each other. I was so happy that they got together. Keito and Kouichi had more chemistry with each other. He protected her, and cared about her. I just really loved Kouichi. He is on my list of top ten shoujo boyfriends! ヾ(´▽`;)ゝ

Momiji was very memorable for wearing her lolita fashion. She was being true to herself. I wanted her happiness in the end. For some reason, I thought she was going to end up with Rei which that did not happen. I was not as disappointed as I thought I would be because I read the extra chapter. I thought it was really cute that a boy with similar taste in fashion had a crush on her, but she didn’t feel the same. (⋆ʾ ˙̫̮ ʿ⋆)

It did break my heart a bit when Rei revealed that he had no one just so Kouichi and Keito could be together. There were some parts where I was irritated at Rei because of his actions, but I couldn’t hate him. He knew that Keito and Kouichi had feelings for each other, before Keito realized her own feelings. I was so happy that he has matured and started living his dream of playing soccer! (‘ω’)

I highly recommend this manga! I was a really big fan of the animation! The love triangle wasn’t annoying at all. I cried tears of happiness and it has one of the best endings ever! All the problems they faced seem so realistic. I was able to relate with them. In addition, I might check out the Japanese drama. It’s only six episodes long. Lastly, I will add Hana Yori Dango in my to be read list since that’s her more famous work. ( ◞・౪・)

Orange by Ichigo Takano: Manga Review

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆Synopsis: One day, Takamiya Naho receives a letter written to herself from ten years in the future. As Naho reads on, the letter recites the exact events of the day, including the transfer of a new student into her class named Naruse Kakeru.

The Naho from ten years later repeatedly states that she has many regrets, and she wants to fix these by making sure the Naho from the past can make the right decisions—especially regarding Kakeru. What’s more shocking is that she discovers that ten years later, Kakeru will no longer be with them. Future Naho asks her to watch over him closely.

Commentary: I highly recommend this manga! It was so good and really short. It’s only 22 chapters and sadly, the mangaka said she is quit her job. Before the release of the last chapter, I was worried that Orange was going to be discontinued, but it wasn’t! Thank the heavens! This story was amazing. I really enjoyed it. I was rooting for Naho to change the future. I really thought it was cute when all her friends team up to save Kakeru from committing suicide. I was on the edge of my seat near the last chapters because it felt that Kakeru was going to go through with it. I am completely satisfied with the ending. I really liked Suwa because he was always there for Naho. It broke my heart how he had to put his feelings aside and let her be with Kakeru. He was very mature about the situation. I liked both of the male protagonists, it was hard to find them unlikeable. On the other hand, you just want to hug Kakeru and tell him everything is going to be all right. I also liked the idea of parallel universe in this manga. In the original universe, Naho and her friends weren’t able to save Kakeru. By sending letters to the past, the group of friends were able to change Kakeru’s fate in an alternate universe. I was seriously happy that they were able to save Kakeru. Lastly, I am excited for the live action of this movie. I highly recommend this manga!! It’s so good!! The ending had me in tears!! ❣╰(⸝⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝⸝)╯❣

P.S. I love the animation!! ʚ♡⃛ɞ(ू•ᴗ•ू❁)

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski: Book Review

“You don’t, Kestrel, even though the god of lies loves you.”

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆ Goodreads Synopsis: Winning what you want may cost you everything you love…

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

Commentary: Oh my gosh! This book was so good! There is so much I want to discuss! First of all, this book is very political and complex. The book starts off several years after the Herran War. The Valorians were the winners of the war and forced the Herrani into slavery.

Kestrel Trajan, what a character. She isn’t your typical fighter, she’s a strategist. She is cunning, smart, manipulative, and caring. She is the General’s daughter and is constantly pressured into joining the military for her skills. Her father sees how much good she can bring to the empire if she joins. One of my favorite scenes, had to be when Kestrel won her duel against Irex when she blackmailed him, even though he was far more superior when it came to fighting. Kestrel doesn’t want to be in the military, she wants her own independence. She is far more compassionate towards the slaves compared to any other Valorians.

Arin, is a slave and spy. He is just as intelligent as Kestrel. He works under Cheat, the leader of the Herran Revolution. He and Kestrel have a complicated relationship. They think they know what is best for each other. It did feel that both of them kept playing a game to get the upper hand in their relationship. What I really appreciate about this story is that both protagonists don’t instantly fall in love with each other. Their love slowly grows and I love the theme of forbidden love so much. I loved how much he tried protecting Kestrel. He protected her from taking the poison, he protected her from Cheat’s advances, and he protected her from becoming a slave. Secondly, I loved the two alternating pov. (۶ꈨຶꎁꈨຶ )۶ʸᵉᵃʰᵎ

Praise the Lord! No love triangles! Sorry Ronan! Kestrel and Arin are perfect for each other. Ronan tries really hard to gain her affections, but she always ignores him and falls for Arin instead.  ੧| ‾́︶ ‾́ |੭

I did not like Cheat at all. He was corrupt and creepy. I, for one, am glad that he is dead.  Man, he was definitely my least like character next to Irex.

Kestrel and Arin have conflicting ideals, and they have to overcome their issues. Arin wants his people to become a nation, while Kestrel doesn’t want any more deaths for both sides. While reading, I felt sad for the people who suffered on both sides. I was rooting for the rebels to take back their lands. I was not that ending of the book! It was so good!!! I was shocked that the she was forced into a loveless marriage, just so the Arin and his people would have their independence, but at a price. I am really excited to see what’s in store for the second book cause I am hooked!! ╰(◉ᾥ◉)╯

“Arin smiled. It was a true smile, which let her know that all the others he had given her were not.”

“The truth can deceive as well as a lie.”

“My soul is yours”, he said. “You know that it is.”

Tomadachi No Hanashi by Kazune Kawahara: Manga Review

Goodreads Synposis: Eiko is something of a plain Jane and a doormat, while her best friend Moe is a head-turning beauty. Despite their differences, their friendship is as strong as ever.
Guys are always asking Moe out, but her answer is invariably “Only if you promise to put Eiko before me.”

Commentary: I wish the manga Tomodachi No Hanashi were more than just one volume. I really felt that the story could have been expanded a little more. But, I have to say for one volume, it exceeded my expectations. The major theme of the novel revolves around friendship. Eiko’s friendship with Moe was the cutest thing ever! I was really sad by the time I finished it because I wanted to keep on reading. It really had potential to be an entertaining read. The animation is really good for me and I love the character designs. I would recommend it because it’s precious, underrated, and adorable. I loved all the characters, and it was funny seeing Moe and Narugami’s rivalry over Eiko.

Year of the Fish (2007): Movie Review

I’ve waited years to see Year of the Fish ever since I saw the movie trailer on YouTube a couple years back. All these years, I have searched and searched for the movie and I almost lost all hope, until I found out that it was added to Netflix. The movie is based on the Chinese version of Cinderella (Ye Xian). The movie is shot in rotoscope animation, though some people may have a problem with the animation, I thought it made the film unique and charming. The protagonist Ye Xian is a Chinese immigrant who arrives in Chinatown in New York. Believing that she is going to work in a hair salon, she feels confident about saving money for her sick father in China. The owner of the so called hair salon is Madam Su, her father’s cousin, who actually runs a private massage parlor that satisfies men’s needs. Innocent Ye Xian signs a contract with Madam Su in order to pay off her debts since her boss paid for her trip to America. As long as Ye Xian did what she is told, her boss provided her shelter and work. Ye Xian does not realize that she would have to perform sexual acts on the male customers as part of her job. Ye Xian is unable to do the tasks that Madam Su demands of her, therefore, Madam Su punishes Ye Xian severely by making her do all the housework chores. Ye Xian constantly cries because her life is miserable, but proves herself to be a hard worker when it comes to doing her job, although she is constantly mistreated by Madam Su and her rival Hong Ji. There’s also Johnny Pan, a musician who tries to find his own happiness in Chinatown and has problems with his cheating girlfriend. Fate brings Ye Xian and Johnny together when they encounter each other in the streets of Chinatown. Most people already know how Cinderella ends, so I won’t spoil the movie too much. This film was dark, for example, the fairy godmother is a blind witch named Auntie Yaga who many fear, but she shows her kindness to Ye Xian. Secondly, I loved Johnny Pan. I loved the fact that he was not a prince nor a rich musician because it would have made the film cheesy. Johnny is a honest hardworking man who also has his share of bad luck in the city. I definitely recommend this film because it was not your typical Cinderella story. I really loved it and I really enjoyed the soundtrack. I would watch this movie again and it is now one of my favorites. My rating for Year of the Fish is a five out of five. 😀
