MAL Synopsis:

The story begins with Maquia, who is from a family where all the members stop aging in their mid teens. She has no parents and, although her days are peaceful, she feels lonely. Their peace is shattered when an army invades, seeking the secret to her people’s immortality. Leilia, the most beautiful girl in her clan, is taken away, and the boy Maquia has secret feelings for disappears. Maquia is able to escape, but she loses her friends and her home. Wandering alone in the forest, she finds Erial, a baby boy who has lost his parents. The story follows the changing relationship between the two as Erial grows up and Maquia does not.

My friend recommended that I watch Maquia. She attended this year’s Anime Expo, and had the opportunity to see the movie. It came out in my local theater, and it blew me away. Maquia is set in a fantasy past, filled with immortals and dragons from mythology. Maquia belongs to a clan that never ages, and for that, a neighboring kingdom targets her village in order to establish dominance over the world.

Maquia is separated from her people, and faces the world on her own until she stumbles upon a young baby. Maquia adopts the baby, despite her having a different lifespan from humans. Essentially, the main theme of this movie revolves around motherhood. Maquia is a young girl, who is introduced as alone, and you can guess that she was an orphaned in her village. With baby Ariel, Maquia blends into the society, but she could never stay in one spot. She has no permanent home, and this is a problem especially as Ariel grows older.

This movie is emotionally driven, you know that Maquia will outlive her son, but as a movie goer, I had hope for a more positive ending. Maquia made me cry. The ending was extremely sad, but the movie was just so good. Though the tale is about Maquia and her experiences of motherhood, there is a complex political struggle happening in the background. Maquia and her people were sought to out due to their immortality. Her people were prized by a kingdom that tried to establish a hegemony over their society. Maquia is connected to the politics, due to her friendship with the queen. This movie establishes how much a mother is willing to go for her child.

Ariel was provided a happy childhood, and experience. As he grew into a teenager and adult, he has conflicting feelings for Maquia. The child version of Ariel is devoted to his mother, and willing to please her. Maquia tries to keep a normal childhood for her son, though people regard her as strange. There is a point in the movie when Ariel’s friends make fun of him for liking his mom. The teen version of Ariel suffers with conflicting feelings over Maquia. Ariel loves his mother, and is conflicted because they appear to be the same age outwardly. In his teenage years, he suffers a identity crisis because Maquia is viewed as his sister, and he has no means of protecting her.

I really wanted a relationship to be established between Maquia and Lang. There were a couple events in the movie that would have allowed for a romantic relationship for Maquia. This movie is not about romance, but a love that is pure and kind, and endless: Motherhood. Maquia loved Ariel as her son, no matter what happened to her. She devoted her life to raising her child, and that makes this story beautiful and unique, and well worth your time.

Maquia is a beautiful story, and you will find yourself in tears by the end. It is worth it to see! The animation and music are beautiful. I had no idea that Mari Okada directed this! It was wonderful. I’ve seen her other works like Anohana.

Otome Yokai Zakuro: Anime Review

MyAnimeList Synopsis: The modernization of Japan has begun. The Ministry of Spirit Affairs is established to resolve mysterious incidents involving the nation’s spirits. This ministry consists of representatives from both the human and spirit worlds. Zakuro, Susukihotaru, Bonbori, and Hozuki are all half-spirits who have been partnered with the second lieutenants Kei, Riken, and Ganryu. These half-spirit girls and the male second lieutenants are all assigned to Spirit Affairs in an effort to join forces and carry out any tasks given to them!

Aired: Oct 5, 2010 to Dec 28, 2010

Commentary: I read the manga before starting the show years ago. I had no idea that it had an anime adaptation. I decided to watch it since it was only thirteen episodes! Now all I have to say is that it is a bit different from the manga, but I am only going to review the anime itself.

My favorite couple from this series is Susukihotaru and Riken. I would have loved it if they had more scenes together because those two are really adorable together!! I liked them much more as a couple than Zakuro and Kei. Susukihotaru is the motherly one of the group of half spirits. At first, she was thought Kei was cute and she was scared of Riken. As the show went on, she and Riken started bonding more and had their cute moments together.

otome yokai zakuro manga cap.png

My favorite guy is Kei!I loved how he was a bit of prince charming, but yet was afraid of spirits. I loved how much he was slowly changing from the first episode to the last! I loved how much he was willing to do anything for Zakuro! He and Zakuro had a happy ending, and I thought it was so cute how they finally were honest with each other about their feelings. The twins were also amazing!! They are definitely going on my favorite twins list.

 tumblr_m7h2xfE3Zp1rbyttso1_500.gif

Now what I really liked about this anime was the concept of how the half spirits came to be. Girls who were spirited away often became pregnant by fox spirits. Female children were the only ones to look half human/half spirit, but not the males. I liked how near the ending of the show, it was revealed how half spirits came to be! The opening song did kinda give away who the bad guy was. Other than that, I wished that the the series were a bit longer! The animation was not the best, but I really loved the fight scenes. I really loved the attack song!

Though I really enjoyed this anime, I did have a some minor issues with it. It was very instalove and it was quite cliche at some moments. I didn’t like Zakuro as much as the other girls. Susukihotaru was definitely the best girl of the series. I also would have loved if the guys had their backstory revealed. I know that the manga is still ongoing!

My favorite song from the OST:

Toradora: Anime Review

We all live under the same sky. If each of us learns to shine, it won’t matter how far apart we are. We’ll be able to see each other.

MyAnimeList: Despite Ryuuji Takasu’s gentle personality, his eyes make him look like an intimidating delinquent. Class rearrangements on his second high school year put him together with his best friend, Yusaku Kitamura, and his hidden crush, Minori Kushieda. Along with these two comes Kushieda’s best friend, Taiga Aisaka. Her delicate appearance contrasts with her brutal personality. Secretly in love with Kitamura, Taiga agrees to help Ryuuji with his love interest as long as he helps her get closer to hers.

Aired: Oct 2, 2008 to Mar 26, 2009

Commentary: Toradora was amazing! Many of my friends have recommended the anime to me and I finally watched it after all these years! I really didn’t know what to expect, but I really loved it. I love how both Taiga and Ryuuji don’t instantly fall in love with each other. They don’t like each other in the beginning. I loved how they team up together in order to get their crushes attention. I did enjoy the pacing of the show. There were many funny moments in the show, but there were many serious moments as well.

I did like Taiga, but I found Minori and Ami far more interesting. I really thought that Ami was the best girl. I did feel that she was a bit underdeveloped compared to the other girls. I would have wished for more Ami in the anime. She was one of my favorite characters from the series. My second favorite girl was Minori. She was hilarious and I loved her friendship with Ami. I felt really sad for her during the last couple of episodes, and what makes things sadder was how Minori felt guilty for liking Ryuugi. Minori wanted Taiga’s happiness even if it meant losing Ryuugi. Episode 24 made me tear up. taiga.gif

One of my favorite quotes is from Minori:

My happiness can only be… can only be made with my own hands! My happiness doesn’t depend on anyone but me!

I like Taiga, but initially I did not like her. She grew on me as the episodes progressed. It was by the second half of the series where Taiga became far more likable. Taiga was such an amazing friend. She kept hiding her feelings for Ryuugi thinking that he would be better off with Minori. The Christmas episodes were one my favorites from the series. All the characters were amazing and unique. Ryuugi was hilarious! I loved how much he was obsessed with cleaning. I really loved the chemistry between Ryuugi and Taiga, they are one of my favorite pairings! I really loved how comfortable Taiga became around Ryuugi. It was cute seeing how they gradually fell for each other. This is a series that I would rewatch.

toradora kiss gif.gif

The OST was amazing, and my favorite opening was Silky Heart By Yui. I loved, loved, loved Lost My Pieces, it was one of the most beautiful songs from the series. I wished Toradora had another season. The animation was great. I did have some minor issues with the series, but other than that I truly enjoyed each episode and I highly recommend watching this show! Lastly, the ending was really cute!!

Yuki Yuna Is A Hero: Anime Review

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆ Synopsis: Follow the adventures Yuki Yuna and the “Hero Club” she joins as they aim to do their best for the community they live in, ranging from helping other clubs to fighting off mysterious enemies known as “Vertex”, all in time to attend classes and have fun.

Commentary: When I first watched the pv of this anime, I thought it was going to be a cute show about a group of friends. It looked fun. You wouldn’t think it was a dark anime. I was not prepared for I got myself into. Yuki Yuna had its moments of fun, but at the same time, it was dark. The five protagonists are working for the Taisha (government) in order to protect the world from vertexes that are a major threat. The protagonists work hard to protect Shinju (god). Now, Yuki Yuna reminded me of  Puella Magi Madoka Magica because each girl had a price to pay for being a magical girl. The heroes get experience points for the vertexes they destroy. Each girl has a flower on her uniform that indicates how much experience points she has received. When the mankai guage (five petal flower) is filled, the girls transform into their ultimate forms, making them nearly unstoppable. There is a catch to all of this, when they return to their normal selves, they sacrifice a part of themselves permanently. ༼ ༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ༽

Characters: Yuki Yuna is the one of five protagonists in this anime. She is the definition of what a hero is supposed to be. She was willing to fight anything as long as the ones she loved were protected. Yuna constantly put others needs before herself. She is also physically strong. Overall, she is positive and motivates other characters. She is the best friend of Togo Mimori. In hero mode, she fights with armored gauntlets.

Mimori Togo is disabled and has lost memories “due to an accident”. She is the mature one of the group and always speaks her mind. She is very talented in baking and is the techie of the group. She has feelings for Yuna. Togo fights with rifles when she is in her hero form. She used to go by the name of Washio Sumi (Washio Sumi Is A Hero: light novel and prequel), she fought the vertexes in her past. She was an archer when she was still called Washio Sumi. Because she filled her mankai twice, she lost her memories and the ability to walk.

Fu Inubouzaki is the leader of the Hero club. She recruited Yuna and Togo to join the club. She feels responsible for the safety of her friends, especially her younger sister. She is often a loud mouth, but at the same time mature. She is both sister and mother because her parents were killed. She wields a giant sword in hero mode.

Itsuki Inubouzaki is the younger sister of Fu. She is timid and shy, and wants to become a singer. She admires her older sister a lot for always being helpful. Itsuki aspires to be like Fu. She has a hobby of telling people’s fortune by using tarot cards. In hero form, she has magical vines that ensnares vertexes.

Karin Miyoshi is the tsundere of the group. She was introduced in episode 3 and was not chosen by Taisha to be a hero like the others. Because of her dedication and rigorous training, she was given her powers. She is very stubborn and has a hard time communicating her feelings. She is very loyal to her friends and opens up eventually. (இ﹏இ`。)

If I had to pick my favorite character, it would have to be Karin. She was a true friend to all the other characters. Especially near the ending of the anime, I was in tears when Karin went mankai four times. Karin was willing to sacrifice herself serval times as long as she was able to protect her friends. It was heart wrenching. (⁎·́௰·̀)◞ ͂͂(˒̩̩̥́௰˓̩̩̥̀⁎) My second favorite had to be Itsuki, she was too precious. My favorite moment had to be when Fu wanted to destroy Taisha for withholding important information from them. Fu wanted to destroy everything because Itsuki lost her precious voice as result from sange. I had a feeling that the Taisha were not to be trusted from the start. The Taisha worship those chosen as heroes as shown in episode 8. This series made me cry so much when it started to get darker. I felt it had the perfect balance of dark and fun. I really liked the ending, I thought it was amazing and was glad it ended on a happier note. The scenery is also amazing!! I really want to read Washio Sumi now that I have finished Yuki Yuna. I would recommend just watching the anime first. ‧⁺◟( ᵒ̴̶̷̥́ ·̫ ᵒ̴̶̷̣̥̀ )

I would recommend this anime to Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Akatsuki no Yona: Anime Review

“Even so…to protect you I’m willing to take up a weapon. Even if it means sacrificing someone!” – Yona

☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆This will be my first anime review. I’m trying to include more of my interests on my blog. I’ll try not to include spoilers. (۶ꈨຶꎁꈨຶ )۶ʸᵉᵃʰᵎ

MyAnimeList Synopsis: Princess Yona lives a life of luxury and ease, completely sheltered from the problems of the seemingly peaceful Kingdom of Kouka; however, the sudden murder of the king and betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won places Yona’s life in mortal peril. Forced to escape only with Son Hak, who is both her childhood friend and bodyguard, the naïve princess soon discovers that Kouka is not the idyllic place she envisioned it to be. Poverty, strife, and corruption run rampant, making reclaiming the throne nothing more than a wishful fantasy given the kingdom’s current state.

Characters: I really loved the characters in this short anime. It was really hard to pick my favorite character!! All the characters were likable especially Yona, the protagonist. Yona is the princess whose kingdom was taken from her. She is brave, passionate, bubbly, and strong. She deeply cares for her friends, especially Hak. She constantly wants to be helpful, and not a burden. She learns to adapt to her new environment. She starts off as “weak” and as the series progresses, she learns to use weapons even though he father hated it.

Hak is Yona’s childhood friend and is called the Thunder Beast of Kouka. He is constantly protecting the princess from any dangers and also has a crush on her.He wishes for her happiness, and puts her needs first. In the beginning, he was willing to die for herHe respects Yona and he admires how much she has changed. Hak is also one of the funniest characters in the show. Hak is now on my list of top anime boyfriends, its hard not to love Hak.

Then there is Yun, he is not a fighter like Hak or the four dragons, but he is the genius of the group. He can just about anything such as cooking, healing, and being a strategist. I just love how he calls himself a “handsome young boy”. He is a bookworm and is a bit rude, but he is loveable. He was the caretaker of Ik Soo’s prior leaving on his journey with Yona and Hak.

As for the four dragons, it was hard choosing my favorite, but it has to be Shin-Ah. He is the Blue Dragon, and has the saddest storyline from the other two dragons (the yellow dragon’s story has not been told completely). He was born in a village where people saw his gift as a curse and he is hated among his people. He has the ability to see long distances. He hardly removes his mask because he feels  he is a monster. It was really heartbreaking to learn that he had no proper name when he joined the group. Yona is the one to give him his name. He is the shyest of the group and rarely talks. Jaeja, the green dragon, is my second favorite since he reminds me a bit of Sanji from One Piece. He was a pirate before joining the group. He is flirtatious, a playboy, and hates his destiny as the Green Dragon. He wants his own freedom, and doesn’t want to bow down to any master. He has the ability to jump really high in the sky and is very powerful. I love how much he teases and creeps out Hak. After the Awa arc, he changes his mind about the prophecy and joins the group. Lastly, there is Kija, the white dragon. In his village, he is loved for gift. He joins the group and has a rivalry with Hak. Hak constantly calls him “white snake”. Kija has the ability of the dragon claw on one of his arms. His blessed arm is covered in scales and could alter the size of his hand. Kija is the only one from the dragons that deeply believes in the prophecy and sees Yona as the descendant of King Hiryuu. I can’t say much about Zeno, the yellow dragon, since he was introduced on the last episode. I’ll have to read the manga to find about more about him since he doesn’t reveal much to the group. Zeno was the only dragon not to have felt the connection with Yona.

Su Won, is the villain and the current king. He was very loving towards Yona when he was a child, but he changed. I still have my doubts about him. Though he is supposed to be the bad guy, he still cares for Yona and Hak.  It was really hard for me to label him as a villain, because most of his intentions were good such as bringing in more wealth to the Earth tribe and not revealing to his bodyguards that Yona is alive. He is a good king, but his motivations are not clear. That’s why I found him really interesting. Despite killing his uncle, he is trying his best to rid the kingdom of corruption and unite the four tribes. I can’t seem to hate him.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series. I had so much fun watching it. You will not regret watching this series. It is only 24 episodes long and sadly, there has been no news to weather this show will get a second season. It totally deserves a second season! The first season did an excellent job of introducing all the major characters. I really thought it was going to be a stereotypical reverse harem, but it was more than that. There is romantic tension between Yona and Hak, but it’s minimal. The romance doesn’t play a big role in the series. I still don’t see Yona’s father in a bad light. I really liked the animation. The characters are amazing and unique! I laughed so much with this series and loved it! Usually I read a manga and watch the anime adaptation, but this will be the first time I’ll be reading the manga after watching the anime. I loved the instrumental opening to the anime. The ost was perfect. I want to know more about the dragon prophecy because there is no denying that Yona is King Hiryuu. I enjoyed the anime so much, I want to know what happens with Yona and the gang! I can’t wait till season two!!! You won’t regret watching it!! I have no complaints for this anime.⌒°(❛ᴗ❛)°⌒

I would recommend this anime to fans of Ouran High School Host Club and Inuyasha.
